TC Thompson Children's Hospital - Children's Outpatient Surgery

Erlanger and T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital selected TWH to convert approximately 15,000 square feet of existing space to a new Children’s Outpatient Surgery facility. Most of the existing space housed the Hospital’s engineering and maintenance shops; the task was daunting to be sure. Furthermore, the existing building has an inherent hexagonal shape to it, presenting interesting challenges relative to the strict size and technical requirements for such an occupancy.

The resulting project is organized in something of a dual race track or almost “figure eight” arrangement. Nurse stations anchor the mid points of the “eight” and have direct line of sight to all of the 35 patient beds. Patient rooms are designed such that their use can swing from pre-operative functions to full post anesthesia care units as the Hospital’s needs and patient load change over time.

The design is intended to be playful and fun while not being childish. Much of the lighting is indirect and steps were taken throughout the project to negate the institutional feel that is prominent in many modern health care facilities.
