Plaza Urology

The Plaza Urology Group building is a 11,704 s.f., single story structure clad almost entirely in stone. The building houses spaces for six physicians and their support staff.

The Plaza Urology Group is located between two of Chattanooga’s major hospitals. Adjacent neighborhoods are somewhat less than desirable so it was clear the building had to be built to withstand potential abuse. Synthetic stone was chosen because of its ability to resist such abuse, low maintenance requirements, and the warm and appealing aesthetic character it offers.

The site was a good one to work with; the building addresses the street with parking located to the rear. The doctors have private reserved parking to one side of the site. The storm water detention area is treated much as a wetland with appropriate indigenous plantings therein.

In addition to basic programmatic and low maintenance requirements, the Owner wanted a “light and cheery” space for doctors and their patients. All exam rooms, offices, and most ancillary spaces have direct natural light via high windows. The windows are situated in such a manner as to maximize both day lighting and patients’ privacy (a critical concern in a urology clinic).

Stone is used on almost all of the building’s exterior. Tapered stone piers recall buildings from bygone days and serve as quite a testament to the masons’ craftsmanship. Stone is also used on the vestibule and lobby walls in an effort to have a connection between the building’s interior and exterior.
