Eastgate Town Center

In the spring of 1998, a group of investors purchased the almost empty Eastgate Mall, Chattanooga’s oldest enclosed mall, that had been enclosed in the late 60’s. After working with the City of Chattanooga’s Planning Agency and sponsoring a series of public charettes, as well as receiving input from nationally known urban planners, a new concept was developed for a mixed-use center as the hub of the Brainerd area. Over the course of the next seven years, TWH worked on a variety of renovations and additions which contributed to the dramatic changes at Eastgate.

The first major work was the conversion of the former two-story JCPenney building to a 160,000 square foot Blue Cross Blue Shield office and call center. Shortly after, a new two-story office and retail building was designed for a new Goody’s location, their previous location to be occupied by Prudential. These almost twin buildings front Brainerd Road and share a common entrance. Other work included new space for the YMCA in a former theater, exterior renovation of both east and west facades, as well as interior renovations which include a large pool and waterfall. As a part of the Town Center concept, Brainerd Square was developed, which was a park with two-story village-type buildings near Brainerd Road. Architecturally, the buildings were redesigned in a traditional style to reflect a variety of architectural details which are seen in communities across the south.
